What is this fitness about?
It is aerial arts turned into a workout. It uses aerial silks, straps, and hammocks to promote strength, mobility, and flexibility in your body – all while having fun! Aerial moves are made from an aerial apparatus hanging from the ceiling or wall of a gym or studio. In aerial classes at Fit Body Boot Camp, you do aerial exercises on aerial machines like aerial silk trapeze rings, static fabric hoops, and double mini trampolines!
How can I start doing aerials?
Once you’ve found a class at your local FITBODY boot camp or through another source (like YouTube videos), it may be challenging to know where to begin when starting with exercise. Some instructors have aerial programs that are safe and effective for aerial beginners. In contrast, others will require you to be more advanced.
As long as your instructor is trained in aerial safety (which they should be), there’s no right or wrong way to start doing this workout! But don’t worry – we’ve got a few tips on how to get started:
- Make sure you’re always holding onto the aerial apparatus with at least one hand (if not both), so your body weight isn’t pulling against one side of the aerial fabric. This reduces strain and pressure on it significantly.
- It also helps if you have an overhead bar where the aerial comes down from, like those found in gymnastics rings training equipment, but even just using something like a broom handle or aerial hoop can work.
- If you’re looking to build strength, try squeezing the aerial between your legs and holding it with both hands while performing bicep curls or overhead triceps extensions. Don’t forget about your abs – crunches are best for this workout!
- Aerial yoga is also great because it not only helps strengthen your core but also stretches out tight areas like the back of your thighs. Or, if you want something more intense, try upside-down inverted postures in aerial silk training, which will help tone every muscle group in the body!
