If you are visiting Saigon, Vietnam for the first time, the Indian Restaurant in Saigon is a must-try. Indian food has been popular in Vietnam since the early 1900s and there are many Indian restaurants throughout the city. Saigon offers Indian cuisine with an international twist that can’t be found anywhere else! Here are 3 of our favorite restaurants worth trying while exploring this vibrant city.
One:
Indian Roti – This restaurant offers Indian food with authentic flavors from India’s southern regions including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. What makes their menu so unique? They offer dishes like Veg Thali (a platter of rice, vegetables and lentils), Chicken Tikka Masala (chicken cooked in tomato sauce) or Indian Roti Chaat (crispy Indian bread with chutney and masala potatoes).
The restaurant is located in the heart of District One: 51/34 Phan Xi Pang Street. They are open daily from 11am to midnight, except on Sundays when they close at 20:00.
Two:
My Bombay Kitchen – This Indian street food concept was brought to Vietnam by Bangkok-based restaurateur Prateep Tangmatithamby. The specialties here include Indian Pancakes (Rava Masal Dosa), Indian Tacos (Idli Filling) or Indian Pizza Tawa Fry (a crispy tortilla filled with vegetables and spices). Three:
Mumtaz – This authentic Indian restaurant offers all your favorites like Chicken Tikka Masala. You can also try Indian-style seafood or beef dishes. This authentic Indian restaurant is located in District 11 but they have a second branch in Tan Binh district so you can also try Indian street food dishes.
Four:
Kamat – This Indian restaurant is one of the most popular Indian restaurants among locals and expats living in Ho Chi Minh City. The menu includes both Kerala & North Indian specialties, such as Kebabs (Tandoori), Biryanis, Curry Puffs or Biryani Rice with Chicken / Lamb / Goat Meat
Are these restaurants expensive? Indian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City are pretty cheap and you can easily eat a full Indian meal for just VND 100,000.
If Indian food isn’t really your thing but you’re traveling with an Indian friend who is craving some Indian curry then there’s no need to worry because many Vietnamese people love Indian spices as well so the dishes will be prepared using less oil or ghee than traditional Indian recipes.
In fact, even though fried rice has been adapted from Chinese cuisine it tastes very different from its original version due to the presence of turmeric powder which gives this dish a yellow color, and Indian spices like cumin and coriander.
