Parents usually play an important role in basic reading for kids because the success of a child in school depends on how much they were read to as toddlers.
There are several steps which enable a child learn basic reading and they include:
Read out aloud to the kid
A parent can start reading out loud to their kid from when they are newborns because this helps create a special bond between the two of them , and it also helps the kid develop love for books.
Reading to them when they are young also helps prevent hindrances that might happen when they begin school.
It’s always advisable to read to a child about three to different four books in a day for about twenty minutes, and some of the books appropriate for each age are like; from birth to one year one should read to a child lullaby or song books, from ages one to three rhyming, songs and short story books are the best, and from ages three to five, alphabet, songs, picture and rhyming books are the most appropriate.
Show them how to hold a book properly
This involves holding the book the right ways and also turning the pages properly, it’s also important to run fingers below the words so that they can understand that reading starts from the left to the right.
Ask questions
Asking the kid questions is a great way to help them understand what they have read, and it also encourages the child to interact with the book.
When the child is about ages two to three years, its important to ask the questions before, during and after reading the book, and also ask them to predict what’s going to happen in the story they are about to read.
Set a good reading example
When training a child how to read, it’s also important to set a good example by reading regularly either a magazine or a novel, so that they can know that reading is a good thing to do and be interested more.
Include numerous areas of development
Children tend to grow interest when they are several areas in cooperated, so it’s important to include words and letters and see what they are interested in most.
Basic reading for kids is always necessary especially when a kid is about to start school because they will be excited and have self confidence.
