Netball skirts have come a long way from simple cotton clothing to high end apparel redesigned for both comfort and performance. Today’s netball wear is designed with the athlete in mind, which has brought forth a number of new features that weren’t there before. Here are some of the tweaks netball female skits have received over the years.
Extended Back Length
Previously, an entire team had to go in for measuring so that each player could get apparel that personally fits them. But then designers discovered that adding a longer back length was the answer to solving this problem. With extended back lengths, one skirt could fit any player in an entire team.
Wider Elastic Waistband
The elastic waistline has been widened as well to reinforce the longer back length and fit into any athlete properly. This widening also ensures the skirt doesn’t feel too tight on the waist, promoting player’s comfort while they make their runs or jumps on the court. Even though it’s a little lighter on the waistline, the elastic band firmly secures the skirt on the player preventing any embarrassing falls while playing.
Flat Seams
Chafing was a big problem with netball skirts worn in the past. Enter the 21st century and this problem is no more. Apparel designers discovered that flatter seams were more efficient in curbing chafing on the player’s skin while wearing the skirt. Players don’t have to worry about waistline bruising at the end of the game or wear an extra garment inside to protect the waist from the skirt.
A Little Modesty Restored with Eclipse Shorts
In the past, netball female skirts were longer and heavier as the industry cared more about the modesty of the player than performance. Thus as players were dignified with all body parts covered, they kind of slacked at each game. To solve this, the skirts were shortened and lighted alright, but the eclipse short inside spared the player a ‘red face’ moment.
Pure Cotton to Manmade Fabric
While cotton was breathable in the past, it did less about thermoregulation for the player. This resulted to profuse sweating and discomfort, affecting the player’s performance. Cotton fabric was reconstructed and fused with ideal fabrics with better thermoregulation. It led to improved netball skirts that felt breathable and prevent hypothermia/hyperthermia.
Pleated Hems
As the seams got flattened, the hems got pleated to enhance style in the netball female skirts. Additionally, this pleating improved the player’s motion on the court whist looking stylish in the new design.
Netball skirts have come a long way from what they used to be. The waistline was engineered to fit, the fabric reconstructed for better heat handling, and the skirt was designed light enough to be worn with extra inner garment for modesty.
