Data stored in computers and servers are vulnerable to different types of security threats. The risk increases manifold if the computer or server is connected to a network like the Internet. It is not possible to keep all computers disconnected from the Internet network. Many works are now done online using applications that reside in the cloud. These jobs require continuous online connected computers. This connection also provides the route hackers use to enter the computer system and steal or damage the data. The job of a computer security analyst is to protect the computer network from such risks. The professional has to create, maintain, and control security systems to protect the computer networks.

The Job

The task involves implementing security solutions that help protect data, networks, and computer systems. The analyst must keep up to date with the latest infiltration techniques being used by hackers. It requires studying the latest IT intelligence reports. The goal is to prevent data loss and operation interruptions. The computers and networks must never stop or face issues due to attacks or infiltration by hackers or through malicious software like malware, viruses, and worms. Effective security software programs for data encryption and protection should be used. The analyst has to test, plan, and implement network disaster plans. The job involves helping other staff of the organization deal with the security issues and be prepared for security threats.

Defining Data Leakage

There are various reasons data leakage occurs. When a personal computer or less secure system is connected to the network, it provides a door for hackers and other security threats to enter the system. Human error is a common reason for data leakage. People using computer and network systems make mistakes. They may click rogue links that look genuine on face value. The administrator or other users of computers may configure the system incorrectly. An application that does not have proper security features is installed. The shared documents must have adequate security controls. A corrupt hard drive can lead to loss of data. Lack of robust backup also causes data loss. The security expert has to fix all these issues.

Preventing Data Loss

The professional has to create an information risk profile, response chart, impact severity reports, and incident workflow diagrams. Incident response is defined based on the risk level. Senior security analysts have to work with the auditor, forensic investigator, incident analyst, IT administrator, and other senior and junior staff members of the organization.

The IT security analyst is responsible for preventing cybercrimes and protecting the information systems. The job may require training employees of a company on IT security issues.
