What are the main differences when it comes to differentiating between Editorial Models and fashion or commercial models?
As the two are the actual categories which models fall under, Editorial and Commercial this would be your main industry difference which will take us further into detail to the differences as per summarized below:
COMMERCIAL MODELS AND PHOTOGRAPHY:
- Commercial modeling or photography is used to sell products and also used to display products such as jewelry, clothes, and other fashion items that are used for normal daily living or outings that shows the fashion of the day.
- The commercial model industry’s model criteria is also very focused on a certain type of model which differs a bit from a fashion or ramp model and is not as strict when it comes to height and that specific thin tall shapeless fashion models.
- The commercial or fashion models always have a look that suits a fashion brand and are usually cast to a modeling assignment on a brand that they are graded against and represents that brand as much as per what the assignments are.
- The commercial or fashion models are much more lucratively reimbursed for their shoots than any other of the models and markets, as they are almost always more in demand for a brand match and look that sells the particular brand and its fashion statement.
- The age group for these models are also much different from other forms of models (starting at an age of 25 and older) as the brands do not specifically cater for fashion for the younger generation of consumer hence the no need of a younger model.
EDITORIAL MODELS AND PHOTOGRAPHY:
- Editorial Models are a totally different kettle of fish when compared to the fashion and commercial models in many aspects.
- They are known to have more of an unusual but unique and edgy look that is needed for most of their shoots which are featured in your editorials and magazines that usually tell a story or works in hand with an editorial or story.
- Here you have to be more of the taller type model with the exception of Kate Moss.
- Even though many consider this a more prestigious type of modeling career than any of the other types especially commercial, they tend not to be as lucrative financially but the exposure of this type of modeling leads to many more advertising campaigns which makes these models more in demand
- The exposure can lead to more than just advertising campaigns but also to acting careers as many have now seen and broken through to like Cindy Crawford, Vanessa Williams (who also went into a singing career) and lately the action superstar Milica Bogdanovna Jovovich ( better known as Mila Jovovich and who is also now starting a fledgling music career.)
- Another big difference between the two is that Editorial Models start their modeling portfolio’s much earlier at around 14 or 15 years of age already
