What Is Telematics Used For?

Telematics refers to an interdisciplinary process that involves telecommunications, vehicle technology, electrical engineering devices and computer science. It refers to using technology to send, receive and store information related to controlling objects remotely, the use of telecommunications to control vehicles as they are moving, the use of global positioning systems (GPS) integrated with computers to provide navigation systems in vehicles and the use of such systems in cars and other vehicles.

Its most commonly known use is for Telematics where the location, movements, status and behavior of one or more vehicles are recorded. This is done through a combination of a GPS received and an electronic device that is installed in the vehicle which transmits data back to the user through a GPRS modem or SMS sender to a web-based software or a PC application. This data is used by management reporting tools, most often through computerized mapping software that shows the position and status of the vehicle over a period of time.
