Clean water is necessary not only for human consumption but also for agricultural applications. Water is not in the right condition at many places. Most regions have hard groundwater that contains different types of minerals. If this water is supplied to the plants without any filtration, it can cause plant growth problems. The minerals also cause scaling problem inside the pipes, pumps and machinery. Agricultural water purification becomes necessary to solve all such problems.
Reasons for Water Contamination
The water supplied by the municipality contains chlorine to prevent growth of bacteria and algae. This water cannot be supplied to the plants because chlorine can damage the plant. This chemical must be removed if this water is used for plant watering and agricultural applications. Water sourced directly from ground contains different types of minerals. It may even contain chemicals if the area is near an industrial or habited location. All chemicals being used in the industries, homes and businesses enter the groundwater and affect its quality.
Why Purify Water for Agricultural Requirements?
It may seem plants have cell level structure to purify the water. However, there are many chemicals that have the same or even lower viscosity than water. The plants cannot separate these chemicals from the water. This is the reason minerals and chemicals that can mix completely with the water and get sourced by the plants are used in the fertilizers and plant growth formulations. Some types of chemicals and minerals are good for the growth of plants while others are not. Purifying the water for agricultural requirements becomes necessary when unwanted substances are present in the water.
Different Purification Methods
Depending on the specific requirement, water can be purified using simple to complex methods. Selection of the right method depends on the type of water needed and the type of water available. Simple filtration is sufficient to clean the water that is not highly contaminated. Complex methods are needed for water that contains a lot more contamination. These methods can involve multi-step purification process to remove all contaminants. Reverse osmosis technique is used widely to filter water. Its membrane is capable of removing large particles and impurities. An activated carbon filter may be used before the water is purified with reverse osmosis technique.
Agricultural water purification ensures healthy growth of plants. This water takes in fertilizer chemicals easily and becomes a good medium for carrying these chemicals to the plant. Purified and softened water also prevent mineral deposits inside the pipes, pumps and containers.
