Ways To Reduce Blue Light Exposure

Excessive bluelight is known to cause eyestrain. This is something that a lot of office workers have become familiar with. They stare into a computer screen for several hours each day while trying to complete their tasks. There is no going around it as these are their primary tools. They can minimize the strain by taking frequent breaks such as prescribed in the pomodoro technique (work for 25 minutes and rest for 5 minutes). The breaks should be used to stand up, stretch, walk around, and do eye exercises. Simply closing them can work, too, if they are really tired. The following techniques could also make the screen more eye-friendly:

Screen Filter

You can buy a bluelight filter and use it to cover the whole screen. This is a thin plastic sheet that is available in various sizes. Just find one that is big enough to mask the entire monitor. It is cheap, easy and instant. Blue light will still pass through but at a much lower level. Your eyes will not tire as easily as before. The downside of this solution is that the screen will perpetually have a tint and images will not look truthful with their skewed colors. This might be fine for those who are primarily working on texts and numbers but not people who are into graphics and videos.

App Filter

An alternative solution would be to download and install an app filter. This type of software can be programmed to run at a specific time or manually induced to turn on at any moment. You can also turn it off when you don’t need it or when you would like the screen to produce colors faithfully to appreciate an image. You can find these for free if you search online. It is much more flexible than having a fixed physical filter on the screen. You could also adjust the settings manually to achieve the same effect but having the software makes it easy and automatic.

Blue Light Eyewear

The third option is to get yourself bluelight eyewear. These are glasses with a special filter that allows them to reduce the amount of harmful light that reaches your eyes. The coating can be added to graded lenses. Those who need new prescription glasses can use this opportunity to ask their ophthalmologist about it. In other words, the filter become a removable object that sits closer to your eyes compared to a screen filter. You can put it on and take it off as you wish. Instead of just being limited to the monitor, it can also block light coming in from all devices and all directions.
